Queen of Kenyan Beauty Sentenced To Death For Killing Her Boyfriend
A beauty queen in Kenya was sentenced to death for murder. Ruth Kamande who holds the title of ‘prison beauty queen‘ was found guilty of stabbing her lover 25 times to death.
Kamande (24) won the title of Queen Prison Beauty while in local custody while waiting for her trial proceedings. She was charged with murdering her lover, Farid Mohammed (24), in 2015.
Kamande was found guilty of murder in May. The verdict for Kamande was held this week. Kenya High Court Judge Jessie Lesiit dropped a death sentence for Kamande.
“I want young people to know that it’s not cool to kill your girlfriend even if you feel disappointed or frustrated – do not do it,” Judge Lesiit said. “On the contrary, it’s a cool thing to go away and then forgive,” he added.
In his verdict, the judge Lesiit accused Kamande of having a ‘manipulative’ behavior including checking the victim’s cell phone and showing no remorse for her actions.
“I think dropping a verdict other than the one set will make the defendant a hero” she said.
The death sentence was protested by human rights group Amnesty International, calling it ‘cruel, inhuman and ancient’. However, the victim’s family believes that the death sentence is a proper punishment.
“We are glad that this day has come and his parents, his sister actually in court when the verdict was dropped, he (Farid-red) has just started his work when his life was taken away,” the victim’s aunt Emmah Wanjiku told reporters.
Kamande’s lawyer, Joyner Okonjo, said his client would appeal the death sentence.
