For style that’s always on point no matter what you’re doing, here’s how to work four key spring trends all day every day.
- 80s throwback
The ’80s was a decade of bold style, colors, and silhouettes (permed hair included), with trends spanning ripped tights and leather to polished oversized blazers, and style icons ranging from Joan Jett to Brooke Shields.
“Polka dots, puff-ball sleeves and romantic ruffles are having a major moment,” says stylist Madeleine Bowden. “A polka-dot shirt with ’80s-inspired ruffled or stonewash jeans will take you easily from desk to drinks. Dress the look up with a blazer and ankle boots for day. Then switch in some statement accessories – big earrings and heels – and you’re ready for wherever the night may take you.” Translation: Go big or go home.
- Sheer Style
Fashion is all about total transparency RN. But don’t panic, you don’t have to reveal your big pants to the world quite yet (unless you want to).
For daytime brunching, Madeleine recommends dipping your toe in the trend with a simple lace top: “Play with proportions – a structured leather jacket over a soft lace shirt with a mini cross-body bag makes for a more interesting silhouette,” she says, adding: “For late-night cocktails, a sheer top over a lace bra with high-waisted trousers and heels will turn heads.” Alternatively, for date nights, mix it up with a semi-sheer dress under your biker jacket.
- Power Pink
Lilac might be giving it a run for its money, but pink is still hot for spring. “Everyone from Fendi to Roksanda showed head-to-toe pink, in all different shades,” says Madeleine. If you want to rock the the head-to-toe look, she suggests mixing different tones for a subtler, edgier take on the trend. Alternatively, she advises, “a flash of colour by way of a fun print or statement earrings, is a great way to incorporate pink into your wardrobe.”
For day, try a deconstructed trouser suit with a slogan tee and trainers. For evening, whip off the T-shirt and add killer heels.
- Glam Grunge
This trend is all about mixing the feminine with the functional, with a heavy dose of ‘90s nostalgia thrown in. Pass the bucket hat.
“Alexander Wang celebrated the lace and khakis combo in his SS18 show, exhibiting his usual mix of fierce streetwear and feminine shapes,” says Madeleine. “Layering and texture are key here – lace, leather, parka. throw on some biker boots and you’re good to go. For an evening take on the look, add some heels and a soft leather waist belt.”
This is a trend you can werk for the office with khaki trousers and a cool shirt, for festival season, or for nights out with the squad.
