Phuket is an island and also a province (changwat) of Thailand. The island is served by Phuket International Airport, located in the northern part of the island.
The famous tourist island of this beautiful beach was severely damaged after being hit by the devastating tsunami in late 2004.
The majority of the population is Buddhist but there are also large numbers of Muslims (17%).
Phuket is Thailand’s premier entertainment park. Recognized from the heavily wooded mountains, the beautiful beaches, and the turquoise waters, the island’s geographic wonderland undercovers an ever-evolving entertainment area.
Most tourists to the west coast to visit Patong, Surin, Kamala, Kata and Karong beaches that have been developed and photogenic. Explore further south towards Cape Panwa and you will find a more relaxed place with local life, or head north to the Phuket Lagoon complex, where hotel clusters, restaurants and entertainment attractions make it ideal for families.
The old Phuket Town, with its beautiful architectural heritage, the Thai-Chinese-Indian-Malays population, as well as the thriving culinary, is a pleasant cultural diversion from the beach and snorkeling. A trip to Phuket is not complete without a visit to the spectacular Phang Nga Bay – limestone cliffs and dramatic turquoise waters more than just being uploaded to Instagram.
